The tall and stately J. R. D. Tata (1904 – 1993), was an outstanding industrialist and an aviation pioneer of India.
Tata, as he was fondly known, was born in France to Suzanne Briere. His father was Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. In 1929, he was the first licensed pilot in India and the founder of India’s first commercial airline – Tata Airlines in 1932. It was Tata Airlines that became Air India, India’s national carrier, in 1946.
