LIME STONE IS USED AS A BUILDING MATERIAL , AND TO PURIFY IRON IN BLAST FURNACES . IT IS ALSO USED IN MANUFACTURE OF GLASS AND OF CEMENT .(one of the components of concrete .)

Limestone is mainly calcium carbonate(CaCo3), when it is heated it is decomposed in calcium oxide(cao) and cabon dioxide(Co2).It is a valuable natural resource used in many things are listed below.

1.for making cement-heated with clay in kiln.


(a)concrete-mixed with sand, water and crushed rock.


(b)mortar-mixed with sand and water.

2. In glass making industry-heated with sand and soda(sodium bicarbonate).

3. To neutralize exess acidity-Limestone, quicklime and slaked lime are all used to neutralise excess acidity - which may be caused by acid rain - in lakes and in soils.

4. Limestone can be used as building material and in manufacturing of iron.

5. It is also used as as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, and as a chemical feedstock for the production of lime.

6. As a reagant in flue-gas desulpharization, it reacts with SO2 for air pollution control.

7. Purified, it is added to bread and cereals as a source of calcium

8. It can be used for remineralizing and increasing the alkalinity of purified water to prevent pipe corrosion and to restore essential nutrient levels

9. It is often found in medicines and cosmetics.
