The Indus script is a corpus of symbols produced by the Indus Valley Civilization.
Explanation:
- The script from the Indus Valley is pictured and "graved" on the sheets and tablets of copper. The first documented cases of Indus Script signs are found in the early Harapan period and were taken from Harappa in Ravi and Kot Diji pottery. This is an early stage in the development of the Indus Script, provided that on the surface of the potters, there is only one symbol. In the Urban Period when long entries are known, its entire development was accomplished.
- Examples were provided of Indus writing on seals, pottery, bronze arms, stoneware, bones, on small steatite, ivories, bronze & copper tablets, "seals and impressions." Square stamp seals are the prevalent form of Indus written mediums, they are usually 2.54 cm inches and the animal motif appears above the writing. They are mainly steatite, some of which have a coating of smooth quartz, but copper, calcite and faience sizes. The screens were positioned on a folding surface ( e.g. clay) to replicate the image.
- The Indus Script was often meant to be a 'administrative instrument' as writing is mostly connected to elite who tried to registry and control transactions in old times. Examples are also seen in tags on clay attached to packets of traders exchanged; in the area of Mesopotamia, far outside the Indus Valley, some of these tags on clay were used to illustrate how massive items had travelled through ancient times. Other examples are available.
- In narrative art, the Indus script was mostly used, combining pictures with portrayal of people , animals and/or imaginary creatures depicted in active roles. Myths or storeys have been associated with these image pictures. This last application is close to that which was well-illustrated in other systems of writing in religious, literary and liturgical use..
