it states that when a body is partially or wholly immersed in a liquid then it experiences an upthrust which is equal to the weight of liquid displaced by it.
an iron nail sinks in water while ship floats because density of iron is greater than that of water so the weight of nail is more than the upthrust . but ships do not sinks because the ship is hollow and the empty space in it contains air which makes it's volume large and average density less than that of water. therefore the ship floats .
I hope it will help u.
