Acids are those chemical substances which have a sour taste. Acids essentially contain hydrogen. Acids dissolve in water to give hydregen ions (H.). Acids may be mineral acid or organic. while as Bases are the solutions of substances like caustic soda, lime & washing soda are bitter in taste & soapy to touch (slippery to touch). They called bases. Bases are the chemical opposites of acids. A base is a chemical substance which can neutralize an acid. A base when dissolved in water give hydroxide ions (OH- ) eg sedium oxide (No.₂0 Sodium hychoxide (NaOH), Calcium oxide (Cao), Magnesium Oxide (Mgo).

ACID

  1. Acids are sour in taste.
  2. Acids turn blue litmus red.
  3. Acids do not change the colour of red litmus.
  4. With china rose indicator, acids give dark pink colour.
  5. Acids do not change the colour of turmeric indicator.

BASES

  1. Bases are bitter in taste.
  2. Bases do not change the colour of blue litmus.
  3. Bases turn red litmus blue.
  4. With china rose indicator, bases give green colour.
  5. Bases turn the colour of turmeric indicator to red.
