When frequency of light is greater than the threshold frequency,part of energy of photon is consumed to isolate electron from metal and rest of the energy isused to enhance kinetic energy of ejected electron.

Thus Einstein showed that,

hν = w + 1/2mv² ,where w is work function.

w = hνo

hν = hνo + 1/2 mv²

This is Einstein’s photoelectric equation.
