Reflex action is the kind of Involuntary action which is due to any kind of stimulus(External or Internal) and this is the response to the stimulus. It does not involvement of brain.

Examples:

  • We withdraw our hand immediately when we touch a hot object.
  • We close our eyes when we enter a bright room from a dark room.
  • We withdraw our hand, when touched any sharp object like thorn or needle.
  • A tap below the knee result in sudden kicking movement.

We already know that Reflex action need to the shortest and quickest path, so that response to the stimulus is as fast as possible.

So, We need to know!! What can be the shortest path for it? Yes, This is known as Reflex arc. It is the shortest path taken by an impulse from receptor part to effector part. ☀️ The path of the stimulus is:

Stimulus ➝ Receptor part ➝ Sensory neurons ➝ Central Nervous system(Spinal cord / Sometimes brain) ➝ Motor neuron ➝ Effector part ➝ Response.

  • Here, receptor is the organ where the stimulus act and you need to response through effector.
  • Sensory neurons carry impulses from receptor of CNS(Spinal cord/Brain). More biologically, Axonal terminal branches of Spinal cord.
  • After getting response order from CNS, motor neurons take the impulses to the effector organ.
  • Effector is the organ where the body responses to the respective stimuli.

↘️ The Reflexes can reach Brain or Spinal cord. So, According to types of Reflexes, there are two types of reflexes : Spinal and Cerebral reflexes.

  • Spinal reflexes - Knee action, Withdrawl of hand when pricked by a sharp object etc.
  • Cerebral reflex - Closure of eyes in bright light, Salication, Sense of sight, hearing, smell etc.
