(1) melting points : ionic compounds have higher melting points than covalent
compounds

(2) boiling points : ionic compounds have higher boiling point than covalent compounds

(3)⏩solubility : ionic compounds have greater solubility in water than a covalent compound

(4)⏩conductivity in aquaeous solution : ionic compounds have greater electrical conductivity in aqueous solution which while covalent compounds are usually non-conductive.

→What are covalent compounds ?

=> Compounds formed by the sharing of electrons of the valence shell are called covalent compounds . For example , CCl4.

→What are Ionic Compounds ?

=> Compounds formed by the gain or loss of electrons are called Ionic compounds. For example NaCl.

Ques. state four major physical properties that can be used to distinguish between covalent and ionic compounds mention the distinguishing features of each case?

=> The following properties can be used to determine the difference between them →

➡Ionic compounds exist as solids at room temperature but covalent compounds exist basically as liquids or gas .

➡Ionic compounds have High Melting and boiling points but covalent compounds have low melting and boiling point .

➡Ionic compounds are Brittle and break when hit hard but it is not so with covalent compounds.

➡Ionic compounds are soluble in polar solvents but covalent compounds are soluble in non polar solvents. [ Like dissolves like ]
