Saliva is secreted into the oral cavity by the salivary glands. It contains many electrolytes, amylase enzyme, and immunoglobulins. It has following functions:

Chemical digestion of the starch in food through the action of amylase enzyme.

Moistening the food for easy swallowing.

Allows the tongue to taste the food by dissolving the food.
