The Rise of the Marathas was strong in eighteenth century. Mughal emperors were powerful only for name sake. The real power existed in the unity of the people and the Marathi language which bound all the people together to safeguard their region and culture

The Maharashtra Plateau had a rugged terrain which naturally made the soldiers of Marathas brave and easily they could defend themselves by practicing Guerilla warfare. Every Maratha was inspired with nationalism in order to save his boundary. They were valorous and great warriors who fought for their region till death.

Also the prevalence of Bhakti cult made many saints like Tukaram and Ram das had taught social equality in the songs and bhajans which made the Maratha society a place where there is equality in between the subjects.
