When soap is dissolved in water, its hydrophobic ends attach themselves to the dirt and remove it from the cloth. Then, the molecules of soap arrange themselves in micelle formation and trap the dirt at the centre of the cluster.

Soap works in breaking the oil in small components and these drops get mixed with water and then the hydrophobic end of the soap removes these drops.

Explanation:

  • Soap has a unique composition and it is formed of molecules that have different water reaction properties.
  • On one end of the molecule, they are an attractant to water and therefore these are hydrophilic.
  • On the other hand, the other end acts as hydrophobic. When soap comes into contact with oil, it initially breaks it into small components and then the oil parts get mixed with water and the hydrophobic end of the molecule removes them from the fabric or utensil.
