Joule's law of heating states that when a current 'i' passes through a conductor of resistance 'r' for time 't' then the heat developed in the conductor is equal to the product of the square of the current, the resistance and time.

Vimarsh28: Joule's law is given by:  Q = I2Rt Corresponding units: joules(J) = ampere2(A2) · ohm(Ω) · second(s)  Where:  Q is the heat generated I is the current(constant) R is the resistance of the conductor t is the time   The unit of the heat generated is joule, which can be rewritten as:  joule = kg · m2 / s2

Joules Law:

It states that " when a current is passed through the conductor, heat (h) is produced which is directly proportional to its resistance (R), then the time (t) taken by the current to flow, and the square of the magnitude of the current (I)".Its mathematical form is " H ∝I^2 × R×t".

  • This law basically gives the rate at which heat is produced in the presence of a steady current which is directly proportional to resistance and square of the magnitude of the current.
  • This law is based on the principle " heating effect of electric current".
  • This phenomenon is used in electrical devices like electric heater, geysers, etc.,
