Lenz`s law states that the direction of the current induced in a conductor by a changing magnetic field is such that the magnetic field created by the induced current opposes the initial changing magnetic field.

  • Expression for induced emf:
  • Let a rectangular coil PQRS move in a uniform magnetic field such that velocity (V) of the coil is perpendicular to the field (B).  
  • ϕ=B.PQ.QR  (PQ.QR=area of loop)
  • When the loop enters the magnetic field, the net magnetic flux ϕ through area PQRS changes with time. This induces an emf in the loop.
  • ε=-\frac{d\phi}{dt}= -\frac{d}{dt} B.PQ.QR = B.PQ.\frac{dQR}{dt}= B. PQ.V

(Here, PQ is the length of the loop. Let PQ=L)

Hence, motional emf=BVL
