Lenz's law: According to Lenz's law, an emf is induced in a closed coil which is linked with varying magnetic flux. The polarity of induced emf is such that it opposes the change in magnetic flux linked with the coil.

As the metallic rod is kept horizontal along east-west and left freely to fall downward, it moves from north to south such that it is linked with the varying earth's magnetic flux due to vertical component of earth's magnetic field. Hence, EMF will be induced in the rod.

Hey!!

The polarity of induced emf is such that it tends to produce a current which opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it.

Yes, as the magnetic flux due to vertical component of Earth's magnetic field keeps on changing as the metallic rod falls down.

Good luck !!
