Mendeleevwas unable to give fixed position to hydrogen and isotopes in theperiodic table. In Mendeleev’s periodic table, the increasingmanner of atomic mass of the elements is not always regular from oneto its next. It was believed that a more fundamental property thanatomic mass could explain periodic properties in a better manner.

It wasHenry Moseley who demonstrated that atomic number of an element couldexplain periodic properties in a better way than atomic mass of anelement and arranged the elements in increasing order of their atomicnumbers. Then it was found that the various anomalies of Mendeleev’speriodic table were removed by the modern periodic table.

In the Modern Periodic tableelements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic number, removing the anomalyregarding certain pairs of elements inMendeleevs periodic table. ... Hence cobalt will come before nickel even though its atomic mass is greater.
