A body will continue in its state of rest or uniform motion in straight line unless it is compelled by some applied unbalanced force to change its state of rest or state of Motion.

However there are two sub-divisions of Newton's First law of Motion:-

1. A body will continue to be in its state of rest in a straight line unless compelled by some unbalanced force to change its state of rest. This part of the Law is self explanatory, as we experience in our everyday life that a body in its rest position pointing in any direction will remain in the same direction in the state of rest.

2. A body will continue in its state of motion unless compelled by some unbalanced force force to change its state of rest. However, this part of the Law seems to be wrong because any moving body that is on the surface of Earth have to come in rest because of the action of Frictional force.

The first law of motion is stated as: 'An object remains in a state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change that state by an applied force'. in other words we can say that all objects resist a change in their state of motion.

the tendency of undisturbed objects to stay at rest or to keep moving with the

same velocity is called interia.

due to this reason the first law of motion is also known as the 'law of inertia'.

I hope it help you
