Newton second law - according to this law change of momentum is directly proportional to the total applied force.
mathematically it is given as
initial momentum of body p1. = mu
final momentum of body p2= mv
therefore change in momentum= p2- p1= mv- mu
suppose this momentum take place in time t, then by Newton second law ,we have
force directly proportional to( p2 - p1)/time
force= kp2-p1/time
where k is constant of proportionality.the units of force are chosen in such a manner that the value of k comes out to be 1
force. = (mv-mu)/time
force= m(v-u)/time
force = ma
