as we can see in the modern periodic table elements that are placed in same group have same valency so when we see configuration of magnesium it is 2, 8, 2 and when we see the configuration of calcium it is 2, 8, 8 , 2 so we can see that there are same number of electrons in last shell that are 2 and so their valency is also 2 so they are placed in same group
