a theorem attributed to Pythagoras that the square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal in area to the sum of the squares on the other two sides.

therefore, in any right angled triangle, the sum of the squares of the base and the perpendicular is equal to the square of the hypotenuse.

eg,

(5) {}^{2}  + (12) {}^{2}  = (13) {}^{2}

25 + 144 = 169

169 = 169

hence, a triangle having these sides is a right angled triangle.
