Rivers had a much important part in our economy in olden days,since agriculture was the major occupation in those days simultaneously you may understand the importance of the river. River has been used as trade routes, Pilgrimage and as an identity for our ancestors.
Even today Rivers are important for our economy if we look it in a good way we produce Electricity, fishing, even as a Tourist attraction and Pilgrimage.
On the other hand the industrial and house waste are being the source of pollution and diseases, in this scenario or States are fighting for the water from Rivers....

Economic benefits of 'rivers' and 'lakes' in 'GHANA':
In Ghana, the rivers have a very important role, rivers in the African country of Ghana, provide them with a source of water for the purpose of irrigation, agriculture and harvesting.
The rivers and lakes also provide the people with drinking water and water for cooking and washing. The rivers also are a retreat for the migratory birds if any and for the animals around the place to bath and drink water from it. Electricity can also be produced from water given all the facilities are provided.
