State some merits and demrits of green revolution

MERITS:

1) It made India a bread basket producing excess of grains for export.

2) More crops could be grown per plant per hectare with the HYV(High Yielding Variety) seeds

3) With the surplus amounts of crop, India was able to counter its problem of hunger and earn profits on an exponential scale

DEMERITS:

1) The HYV seeds required frequent irrigation and drained the water sources.

2)Excess use of fertilizers and pesticides lead to contamination of ground water sources

3) The growth in agriculture could only be seen in specific agriculturally prosperous regions of the country like UP, Punjab and Haryana
