the law that the force that retards a sphere moving through a viscous fluid is directly proportional to the velocity of the sphere, the radius of the sphere, and the viscosity of the fluid.

Stokes law:

  • It  is  only applied for a sphere fall into the fluid with limited viscosity such that the Reynolds number is much less than 1. In that situation, the force is proportional to velocity.
  • Sphere would be completely uniform regardless because it is completely and uniformly symmetrical in all three dimensions regardless of perspective.
  • A cube’s drag as it moved through a fluid would depend a great deal on how it moved through the substance. Is it leading with one of the faces of the cube or corner or edge. None of these issues would affect the drag on a sphere but they would matter to any other shape. These would all factor in to the drag and would make calculation far more complicated.
