The six physiographic regions of India are:
- The Himalayan Mountains - The Himalaya mountain range is the highest on earth and is often referred to as the "roof of the world".
- The Northern Plains - The northern plain of India is formed by three river systems, i.e. the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra; along with their tributaries. This plain is composed of alluvial soil which has been deposited over millions of years.
- The Peninsular Plateau - The peninsular plateau is a tableland which contains igneous and metamorphic rocks. It is composed of the oldest rocks because it was formed from the drifted part of the Gondwana land.
- The Indian Desert -The Indian desert is also known as the Thar Desert. The Indian desert lies towards the western margins of the Aravalli Hills. This region gets very less rainfall which is less than 150 mm in a year.
- The Coastal Plains - The Western Coastal Plains is a thin strip of coastal plain with a width of 50 km between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. The Eastern Coastal Plains is a strip of coastal plain with a width of 100 - 130 km between the Bay of Bengal and the Eastern Ghats.
- The Islands-The Lakshadweep Islands are in the Arabian Sea. Its area is 32 sq. km. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are bigger in size and has number of islands.
