Advantages

Conversion from one units to another

Preliminary test for validity of equation

Correlation of various parameters in an experiment to understand the relationship between them to form an empirical relationship.

Defining dimentionless constants or units that would make the physical effect to be studied easier.For e.g. Prandtl number, Reynolds number. This is a major implication of dimentional analysis in highly dynamic systems.

Reducing the number of experiments to be conducted. When a dimentionless quantity is formulated, the combination of experiments required for describing in them will be less when compared to the large number of participant variables in correlation.

Disadvantages

Data from large number of experiments may still be indecisive.

Limited in case of trigonometric or exponential solutions.

Impractical for correlation of more than three parameters.

Addition and subtraction of parameters cannot be reflected on dimentional analysis.

It cannot give the final word on the validity of a relationship.

The analysis cannot understand the nature of constants in the correlation.

ADVANTAGES OF DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS :

it helps in conversion of one system of units into the other .

it is useful in checking the correctness of the given physical relation .

it helps in deriving relationship between various physical quantities ...

DISADVANTAGES OF DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS :

dimensionless constant involved in the physical relation cannot be determined ..

it fails to give information about trigonometric functions , logarithmic , exponential quantities involved in the physical relation ...

since there are only 3 quantiies namely M , L and T whose powers can be compared on both sides thus , it fails to derive relation between a quantity which depends on more than 3 factors ..

it fails to derive relations like : S = ut + 1/2 at2 , v2-u2 = 2as ..
