The uterus Wall is filled with blood and mucous to nourish the foetus if fertilization had taken place but as fertilization did not take place, therefore the egg lives for a day and after that the lining of blood and mucous breaks down and comes out of the body. This is called menstruation. This process goes on for 2 to 8 days.
