Soaps are prepared from vegetable oils or animal fats by treating them with 10% sodium hydroxide solution, when the reaction takes place with the formation of sodium salt of fatty acids(soap) and glycol.

The formula of soap prepared from stearic acid (oil) and alkali is :

 C_{17} H_{35} {COO}^{ - } : {Na}^{ + }

The general formula for soap is RCOO--Na, where R stands for the large non-ionic hydrocarbon group.
