Waste land is the land that is put to non-agricultural uses that comprise arid, rocky, & desert areas, railways, roads, industry, and so on. Continuing land utilization for very long time without taking proper measures to preserve  & manage it  resulted in land degradation.

Explanation:

  • Wastelands comprise degraded forests, drought-struck pastures, overgrazed pastures, hilly slopes, eroded valleys, barren land, waterlogged marshy lands, and so on.
  • Wastelands are of 2 types: culturable wastelands  & unculturable wastelands

Culturable Wastelands: These are "cultivable wastelands" that are not fully used to their maximum potential or managed properly for various reasons, such as private/state occupation or are deemed a notified forest area.

Such culturable wastelands comprise gullied lands, surface water-logged & marshy lands, saline & undulating lands. It also comprises the wastelands on the basis of ecological limitations like pastures, degraded forests, sand dunes, shifting cultivation areas,  or mining spoils, and so on

Unculturable Wastelands: These are the wastelands that are not available for cultivation. These comprise barren rocky lands, areas covered by glaciers/snow, & steep sloping areas.
