At the time of independence the industry declined and the main reason for its downfall was the introduction of "Discriminatory Tariff Policy " followed by the colonial government.

The policy allowed free export of raw material from India at cheaper rates which were then used in modern industries of Britain. This helped in selling British goods at a very low price. Indian handicrafts on the other hand suffered from heavy duties on exports imposed by the British government. This led to a major fall in the population involved in manufacturing and a sudden rise in agricultural activities.This ultimately led to a fall in both domestic and international market.
