For total internal reflection to occur, two conditions must be met: The index of refraction must decrease across the boundary in the direction of light refraction. The angle of incidence of the light ray must exceed the critical angle of the interface.

hope this helps you

There are two conditions for total internal reflection of light to take place :

(1) Light has to travel from denser medium to rarer medium but not vice-versa.

(2) Critical angle of the medium θ c =

 {sin}^{ - 1} ( \frac{nrarer}{ndencer} )

where n is the refractive index.

Angle of incidence θ must be greater than the critical angle of medium θc .
