Hard water because of high mineral content reacts with soap to form Soap Scum. ... In this reaction, the sodium ion in soap is replaced by calcium ions. Such soaps are ineffective in washing hair , clothes and dishes . Thus hard water needs large amounts of soap to form a lather.

(i ) Bathing: Hard water does not lather freely with soap solution, but produces sticky scum on the bath-tub and body. Thus, the cleansing quality of soap is depressed and a lot of it is wasted.

(ii) Cooking: Due to the presence of dissolved hardness-producing salts, the boiling point of water is elevated.
