Rivers and lakes have many economic benefits, few of which are:
1. They provide water for irrigation of agricultural fields.
2. They provide water for pisciculture, which sustain many livelihoods.
3. They provide Real estate (shore front property) which are comparitively more expensive than off-shore property. Thus increase in tax revenue.
4. They provide places of tourism. e.g. Dal lake
5. Rivers provide routes for transportation.
