when coal is burnt while operating a steam engine the chemical energy from coal converts into heat energy which is then transferred into water by means of which the water is converted into steam now the steam produced is pressurized with Pistons and hence mechanical energy is produced which drives the wheels of train. basically you can just write conversion of chemical energy into mechanical energy
