The three main types of blood vessels are arteries, veins and capillaries.

Arteries transport blood away from the heart. They are more muscular than veins and they have a small lumen compared to their thick walls. This is because the blood is under such high pressure.

Veins are less muscular than arteries and they have a larger lumen compared to the vessel wall. Veins contain small valves which prevent the back flow of blood. This type of vessel transports blood to the heart.

Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels. They connect arteries to veins. They are only one cell layer thick. Just like all the other vessels, the epithelium tissue is made up of simple squamous tissue.

There are two other types of blood vessels called arterioles and venules. They are intermediates between arteries and veins. So basically, the connection is artery to arteriole to capillary to venule to vein.

Important to remember is that veins should not be classified as vessels that transport deoxygenated blood and arteries transporting oxygenated blood.

One common example is that the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood to the heart and the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood back to the lungs.
