Answer: A salt bridge is U shaped tube containing concentrated solution of an inert electrolyte such as KCl in agar agar and gelatine.

The functions of salt bridge are:

1. It allows the movement of ions fro from one solution to another without mixing of the two solutions, thus completing the internal circuit.

2. To maintain the electrical neutrality of the solutions in the two half cells.

3. It prevents the generation of liquid liquid junction potential i.e potentials arising between the two solutions when they are directly in contact with each other.
