Answer:

(a) Blood is a fluid connective tissue that consists of plasma, blood cells and platelets. It circulates throughout our body delivering oxygen and nutrients to various cells and tissues. It makes up 8% of our body weight. An average adult possesses around 5-6 liters of blood. There are three types of blood cells: White Blood Cells, Red Blood Cells and platelets.

(b) Lymph is another fluid involved in transportation.  Some amount of plasma, proteins and blood cells escape into the inter cellular spaces in the tissues to form lymph or tissue fluid.  Lymph is similar to blood plasma but colorless and contains less protein.  Function of lymph is to carry absorbed digested fat from intestine and it also drains excess fluid from extra cellular space back into the blood.

The functions of blood and lymph are as follows:

(i) Blood

1) Oxygen is transported by the blood to the tissues of the body for the breakdown of digested food.

2) Carbon dioxide is transported to the lungs by the blood plasma.

3) The digested and absorbed nutrients are transported by blood to the tissues. Nitrogenous wastes are transported to the kidneys.

4) It regulates the body temperature and maintains the pH of the body tissues.

5) It transports various hormones from one region to another and bring about the coordination.

6) It maintains water balance to constant level.

7) The lymphocytes produce antibodies against the invading antigens and protect from diseases.

8) It helps in rapid healing of wounds by forming a clot at the site of injury.

(ii) Lymph

1) It cleans the cellular environment.

2) It returns proteins and tissue fluids to the blood (drainage)

3) It provides a pathway for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins into the bloodstream.

4) It defends the body against disease.
