Indulekha Malyalam's first novel written by O Chandu Menon in 1889 revolved around the then hotly debated issue of marriage between the upper class Hindus in Kerala especially the Nambuthiri brahmins and the Nayars . Nambuthiri brahmins were the major landlords and a large section of Nayars were tenants. Indulekha the heroine is shown as a woman of breathtaking beauty and artistic talent . The hero Madhavan is a part of the newly emerged english educated class of Nayars . Suri Nambuthiri a foolish landlord comes to marry Indulekha but she chooses the more educated and handsome Nayar Madhavan. Being desperate Suri married a poor relation from the same family and moves away thinking that he had married Indulekha . Thus it depicted the wisdom of Indulekha with commenting on the topics of upper caste marriages.
