This difference is responsible for the gender determination of the child. Sperms contain XX and egg contains XY. When X of male fuses with X of egg cell, girl child is born and when Y chromosome of male sperm fuses with X of female, male child is born.

Thus, sperm containing X chromosome when combines with X chromosome of egg results in a female child. Whereas sperm containing Y chromosome when combines with X chromosome of egg results in a male child.
