Institutional Reforms of Agriculture

Explanation:

  • Agriculture is considered to be the backbone of India with two-third of the population being dependent on it. Since agriculture provides livelihood to more than 60%  a lot of changes were introduced after Independence
  • In realizing the importance of agriculture government introduced number of Land Reforms which was the main focus of first five year plans like abolition of zamindari, collectivization etc
  • Likewise in the 1960s and ’70s government focused on the green revolution which involved the use of HYV of seeds, pesticides, fertilizers which helped in increasing food production, though it turned out to be a partial revolution as only a few states like Punjab, Haryana benefited from it
  • Schemes like Kissan Credit Card or providing minimum support price, remunerative and procurement prices for important crops have been initiated by the government
  • In an effort to increase agriculture’s share to the national economy government has made concerted efforts to modernize it. Like, the establishment of the Indian Council of Agricultural research, agricultural universities, horticulture development, etc
