An ordinary concave mirror, with a spheric curvature, would make the searchlight beam converge. Instead, as Robert Newton pointed out, a special kind of concave reflector is used: a parabolic reflector. This emits a parallel-sided, non-converging beam that can still illuminate objects a great distance away.
