So if a body initially is at rest so it has potential energy but if falled down

the potential energy will be decreasing and kinetic energy will be increasing and when the body comes to the surface and the final velocity of the body is zero then again potential energy will be formed and kinetic energy will be again zero.

Since we know that

Mechanical energy = (kinetic energy + potential energy )

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY :- PEf - PEi = KEf + KEi
