Dobereiner made groups of 3 elements and arranged them in an increasing order of their atomic masses and found that the atomic mass of the middle element was approximately equal to the mean of the other 2 elements. This group of three elements is called traids

Example : Li,Na,K.

In this traid the atomic mass of Na is approximately equal to the mean of the atomic masses of Li and K (i.e. 23)
