when the force acts on any body on rough surface helps to move it in forward direction then , there is a opposite force also develops that's retards the motion of object
and that's opposite force is called frictional force.

friction is due to the presence of intermolecular spaces between the spherical atoms which makes the surface rough and also it is due to the presence of gravitational force which attracts the body towards another body but due to the movement of the body the value of gravitational force changes.
