The internal lining of stomach contains many gastric glands. Gastric glands present in the walls of stomach generally contains three types of secretory cells.

*Mucus cells produce mucus that protect the stomach lining from the action of hydrochloric acid (HCl).

*Parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid. Due to presence of hydrochloric acid, the gastric juice is acidic in nature. The gastric juice kills the bacteria that may have entered along with the food.

*Chief cells secrete pepsin to digest protein as inactive pepsinogen which is activated when it comes in contact with hydrochloric acid. It also secrets rennin in which helps in the digestion of milk protein.
