Max Planck was inducted to propose a new theory to explain the photoelectric effect when the classical electromagnetic theory failed to do so. The proposed theory is now known as Planck’s Quantum Theory of radiation.

According to Planck’s theory, every atom and molecule has the ability to absorb and emit energy in different quantities but a smallest amount of energy that is emitted or absorbed in form of electromagnetic radiation is what we call a quantum that is directly proportional to the frequency of radiation.

Planck formulated the theory by forming this equation E=hv.

Where

E = energy of the radiation

H = (6.626×10–34 J.s) which is also known as the Planck’s constant.

V = Frequency of the radiation.
