Explanation:

Whittaker's method of classification is more scientific and natural because of the following merits:

1) It is the most accepted modern classificationsystem due to the phylogenetic placing of different living organisms.

2) In this system separation of prokaryotes into an independent kingdom is justifiable.

Robert Harding Whittaker (1920 - 1980) was an American Ecologist. In 1969 he divided living organisms into 5 groups

For the Classification Whittaker considered following criteria

1. Complexity of cell structure: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic

2. Complexity of Organisms: Unicellular and Multicellular

3. Mode of Nutrition: Plants - Autotrphic - Photosynthetic, Fungi - Saprophytic - Absorption from dead organisms, Animals - Heterotrophic and ingestive

4. Lifestyle: Plants - Producers, Animal - Consumers, Fungi - Decomposers

5. Phylogenetic relationship - Prokaryotic to Eukaryotic, Unicellular to Multicellular
