QuestioN :

State the nature, position, and relative size of the image formed by a convex mirror  when the object is

(i) at infinity and

(ii) between infinity and pole of the mirror.

ANswer :

(i) The nature, position and relative size of the image formed by a convex mirror when the object is placed at infinity.

⟶ According to the first ray diagram of a convex mirror, any ray from infinity, which is parallel to the principal axis will diverge in such a way that if we retrace the reflected ray towards it's backward, it will meét at the focus behind the mirror.

  • Position of the image - Behind the mirror at F
  • Nature of the image - Virtual & Erect
  • Size of the image - highly diminished (or point sized)

(ii) The nature, position and relative size of the image formed by a convex mirror when object is at between infinity and pole of the mirror.

⟶ According to the ray diagrams of convex mirror if we place object anywhere between pole and focus, the image will always be formed between Pole and focus behind the mirror.

  • Position of the image - Behind the mirror between P and F
  • Nature of the image - Virtual & Erect
  • Size of the image - Diminished
