Answer: a) Blue litmus turns red

b) No change in red litmus

Explanation:

As SO2 & SO3 are the gas liberated. These are acidic oxides of sulphur. Hence it turns blue litmus red & no change in red litmus.

The observation and inference made by a student when he brings

(a) a wet blue Litmus Paper

(b)a wet red litmus paper in contact with gas liberated during thermal decomposition of ferrous sulphate

Explanation:

Chemical nature

Every chemical substance has certain chemical nature that is :

  • Acidic
  • Basic
  • Neutral

Acid

It is substance which is sour .

Base

It is a substance which is bitter .

Neutral

It is neither acidic nor basic

To detect the nature we have indicators :

Litmus

Phenolpthalein

Methyl orange and many more

Effect of litmus on acid and bases

Acid ; Turns blue litmus red

Base : Turns red litmus blue

Neutral : No effect

When FeSO₄ -----------------> Fe₂O₃ + SO₂  + SO₃

                      (on heating )

Similarly ,

When wet blue litmus paper is brought near the gas liberated : It turns red , due to acidic nature of sulphur oxides .

When wet red litmus paper is brought near the gas liberated : It has no effect because they are acidic not alkaline .
