Acids are highly corrosive and thus can cause severe burns and injuries therefore while diluting an acid we must add acid (drop by drop) to the water
If we add water to the acid as soon as the drop of water touches the surface of acid it will change into steam and this would be a highly exothermic reaction causing the acid to splash out and in some instances the beaker might break due to excessive heat experienced by it.
