Principle of separation of mixture:
We know that the mixture can be separated on the basis of differences between the properties of the materials.
Techniques for separation :
There are the following types of techniques are used for the separation of a mixture.
- Centrifugation: The mixture can be separated by continuously agitating the mixture at a very high speed. The principle is that the heavy particles are settled to the bottom and the lighter particles stay at the top when spun rapidly. used to separate colloidal particles from their solutions.
- Filtration: The mixture can be separated by passing particles through a filter. dust and water can be separated by filtration.
- Sedimentation: This is the settling down of heavy, solid particles in a solid-liquid mixture. A mixture of sand and water can be separated by this technique.
- Magnetic separation: This technique is used when one of the components of the mixture is iron. Iron gets attracted towards a magnet and hence can be separated.
- By using a separating funnel: It is used to separate the components of a liquid-liquid heterogeneous mixture. By using this technique we can separate Kerosene oil and water.
- Chromatography: It is used to separate mixtures by using a moving solvent on filter paper.
