State the principle working of ocean thermal energy conversion plant explain how a plant
Answers
Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) basically heats the engine and then it converts the temperature difference between energy.
So within the same process, the difference between warmer water from the earth and cooler water from the ocean can be converted into energy to form electricity.
OTEC
OTEC or Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a technology which converts solar radiation absorbed by the oceans to electric energy.
PRINCIPLE OF WORKING
It uses the warm surface water to heat and vaporize a liquid (working fluid).
WORKING OF THE PLANT
An OTEC power plant works by pulling in warm ocean surface water and this is used to heat a 'working fluid' such as Ammonia or Propane into a gas. These fluids have a low boiling temperature, which when turned into gas, moves the steam into pressurized shafts that are then used to drive turbines. The turbine then drives the generator, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. A long pipe accessing the very cold water from the depth of the ocean is used to cool and liquefy the gas back into working fluids, so the process can start again.
